Hugo is a rapidly growing suburb of the Twin Cities located just 14 miles north of downtown Saint Paul. Hugo’s neighborhoods are vibrant, strong and well planned out. Many of the neighborhoods are connected to each other by a developing system of paved pedestrian trails that also provide access to an abundance of parks and recreational amenities. The residential growth in Hugo has led to an emerging retail and commercial market, however, much of the land in Hugo remains agricultural or undeveloped.

Hugo is located within the White Bear Lake school system which consists of four Early Childhood program locations (birth-K), nine elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), a two-campus high school (9-12), an Area Learning Center and a Transition Education Center.

Recreation

The city of Hugo provides residents with fantastic parks, trails, and recreational amenities. With over a dozen public city parks, miles of trails, acres of open space, and athletic fields/courts available throughout Hugo, there is always a great place to get active outdoors. The department of parks and recreation also provides a plethora of recreational programming for residents ranging from youth and adult sports leagues to geo caching to Tech Tac Toe classes.

City History

The city of Hugo began as a 3-square mile village that has grown into a 36-square mile commuter town north of the Twin Cities. Since its meager beginnings through 1972, Hugo existed as a farming and railroad community. At that time, the Oneka Township was consolidated with the then Village of Hugo. From 1972 onward Hugo has grown into a mostly suburban city of over 13,000 residents.
